Oddometer 1,968. Location: Sonoma CA. The clacking sound can be the cam chain slapping around, from a failed cam chain tensioner. It's not unheard of. For you to check, you would need to get in under the valve cover or remove the tensioner, which is not very easy on the GS beacuse of the plumbing nearby.

The inside of every socket he could find had a chamfer at the top that reduced the surface area that grips the shallow drain plug.
